Officially, the 220th RAC was authorized only white phosphorus 2.75 rockets to use for marking targets. Note, there are four rocket tubes on each wing. Also note, 3 of the rocket heads are protruding farther out of the tubes. These are not willie pete, only 1 of the 4 is wp. These 3 are 17lb. warheads, either HE, or flachet. |

The YO 3A was extremely slow. I'm not sure but I think it was slower than the Bird Dog. The aircraft was designed to fly slow and quite. It had a six bladed wooden propeller, a belt driven gear reduction system to turn the prop at a slow speed, and a muffler that ran from the cowl to the tail of the aircraft. It was flown in the DMZ area at night. It could fly over at 500-600 feet, and with normal jungle noises, (insects, wind, etc.) would not be heard. |
